Croatia’s die-harts of modern metal continue to redefine what it means to remain genuine and creative—Cold Snap have delivered not just a song, but another cinematic experience with their latest video “Father.” Known for a signature sound forged in over 450 European shows alongside acts like Jinjer and Ektomorf and participation in giants like Wacken Open Air and MetalDays, the band stays relentlessly committed to artistic depth and integrity.
Cold Snap stayed true to the full spectrum of creative production. On “Father,” their dedication to direction, storytelling, acting, and visual narrative is palpable. Frontman Jan Kerekeš, who is also a professional actor and confident in front of and behind the camera, leads a team that wears all these hats—musicians and performers—with impressive conviction. Their output isn’t just another music video; it’s filmic, emotional, and purpose-driven. In this case, the main actor is a child, which is even more powerful.
The Message
In a quote for diparticle.com, Jan Kerekeš described the themes tackled by “Father”:
“I believe that you agree with me when I say that many children today have lost their compass. Many parents have lost control in raising their children, and I think that teenagers are the ones who suffer the most… Children have no authority… and find salvation in the virtual world. The new video and song ‘Father’ is talking about this problem… forced to play ‘shooter’ video games until he decides to become an abuser himself… we need to talk about them and warn each other… because no child deserves so little love and attention that they prefer their virtual life to their real life. We need to take care of each other.”
The track confronts harrowing realities: child neglect, virtual escapism, and cycles of abuse framed through the eyes of a victim. It is hard to watch and yet, necessary.
More than two decades since forming in Varaždin in 2003, and with a discography including Mea Culpa (2005), Empty Promises (2008), Perfection (2010), World War 3 (2013), and All Our Sins (2018)— the band remained loyal to itself. Cold Snap have been through much, and yet they thrive creatively and continuously. With “Father,” they reaffirm their place as metal’s storytellers who dare to challenge and comfort in equal measure—true to themselves, true to their message, and still moving forward.
